* From Maggie & Skeeter Baerstch of Helena, Montana, owner of Bugs Fire N Ice, by Millionaire Playboy out of a daughter of Bit O Olympia si94
"We just got our Paint Racing News Magazine and you will never guess what we discovered. I think I am still in shock. Bugs Fire N Ice now holds two paint racing records. The first one was as a two year old (2006) at Grande Prairie for 250 yards when he ran third to ITS ALL ABOUT SPEED (Alberta Champion - one and one quarter length off). The second one was at Lethbridge (2007) his first start of the year at 220 yards. Even though he ran against the quarter horses, the APHA recognized those times as a record for a Paint going those distances at Whoop Up Downs and Grande Prairie and they are official. I thought that was pretty cool!"

Thank you again girls!!!  Good luck this year!!

Thank you for considering our stallions.  Our business has continued to expand from just one stallion to over 50 stallions since 1972.  We realize that this could not have been possible without the support of the many mare owners and excellent mares over the years.

Doug & Carol

Crimson Jess
Our newest stallion, Crimson Jess si98 was very popular in 2006 and we’re anxiously awaiting for his  new arrivals. He is a stakes winning son of  Mr Jess Perry si113, a  leading sire of Stakes Winners and Graded Stakes Winners! Last year 5 Mr Jess Perry yearlings sold for $200,000 or more, high seller at $415,000.
Crimson Jess is a 2 time Regional AQHA race Champion, has excellent bone, frame and mind.  He is a perfect outcross for the Dash For Cash, Special Effort, Beduino bred mares as his pedigree is Streakin Six and Easy Jet.
This year there are three Crimson Jess  two-year olds presently in race training  in the US – his first foal crop to race. We have nominated Crimson Jess into the Alberta Prairie Gold Stallion Stakes and when his foals come of age, we will pay him into the Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive.

Fast Moon Chic
From a limited number of performers, the first Fast Moon Chic offspring excelled in 2006.  By year-end Chic had sired one barrel futurity champion, one 4 time barrel futurity finalist and one FCA calf roping finalist.  Fastchicalickin & Jodi Hart of Spruce Grove, Alberta won the Whoop-up Barrel Futurity with two very impressive times of 17.333 & 17.39!
This past summer Jodi also purchased from us a full sister to Fastchicalickin, out of a daughter of Givemalickin; Fast Moon Condolessa and will  be riding another Fast Moon Chic this year …thank you and keep up the good work Jodi!
We anticipate another good season, as several more new Fast Moon Chics will be competing in the futurities. His offspring are showing very sensible minds, making them easy to work with, yet they have the speed when needed.  We recently nominated Fast Moon Chic to the Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive.

Root Beers Boots
We are still impressed with the Root Beers Boots foals and continue to breed some of our better race mares to him.  Lynette Brodoway purchased a good colt from us this past summer, Root Sixty Six, out of one of our daughters of Six Fols, sire to Marthas Six Moons.

Docs Paradise
Docs Leo Lee & Debbie Renger made the finals again, finishinga close 3rd at the Calgary Stampede. Deb had placed 11th in the World Standings until her very unfortunate injury last fall, although she still qualified for the CFR. Word has it she is off to a very good start this year.

Millionaire Playboy
Millionaire Playboy continues to throw pretty, honest, competitive horses.  Most people that have them are very pleased with them.

Dudes Genuine San
Several of his colts are in the capable hands of excellent team ropers and barrel racers.  Several of these colts are demonstrating size and the cow sense that we had hoped for before purchasing him.  Continue to watch for Dawn Hellekson & Genuine Honor Jet in competition this year.

New Faces on the Canadian Barrel Horse Stallion Front

Still looking for that perfect cross for your barrel racing broodmare? It’s always a puzzle to try and determine which cross will net the best prospect. The Canadian equine industry boasts many outstanding stallions for those seeking the ultimate barrel horse. This month’s column takes a look at a few of the new kids on the block as far as barrel horse stallions are concerned.

A newcomer to the roster of top stallions at Sandy Ridge Stallion Station in Bassano, Alberta is Crimson Jess. As usual with their program, Doug and Carol Schaffer did their homework before making this purchase, “We were looking for a proven racehorse with an exceptional pedigree and conformation. Our newest stallion is Crimson Jess si 98, a stakes winning son of Mr Jess Perry si113, 2 x Champion Race Horse, Stakes Winner of $687,184.  Mr Jess Perry is currently the leading sire of 2006 money earners & stakes winners. Crimson Jess’ dam, Nava Crimson si 94 is a daughter of Easy Crimson si98 by renowned Easy Jet si 100. In 2005, 69 of the Mr Jess Perry yearlings that sold at public auction at the major US Yearling sales averaged $49,554. This made it very difficult to find an affordable proven stallion.  We feel very fortunate to have Crimson Jess.

He is a 6 yr old, sorrel stallion, standing 15.1½ hh, weighing 1200 lbs.  He earned two AQHA Regional Race Championships. Crimson Jess had 16 starts, 3 firsts, 4 seconds and 5 thirds. He has exceptionally good bone and a powerful body.   When we first looked at Crimson Jess, we saw two of his foals.  One was exceptional, the other outstanding! This gave us the confidence to purchase Crimson Jess as he showed the potential of being a great sire.

Originally, Crimson Jess was purchased by Al Carruthers of Butte, Montana from Blane Schaneveldt, a leading race horse trainer from California. Crimson Jess wears Blane’s famous silver bit brand.

We had been following the young stallion, Mr Jess Perry si 113 for a couple of years and wanted a proven son of his. We felt that he was going to become the newest stallion in demand. Mr Jess Perry’s pedigree also included Streakin Six si104 and Sinn Fein si98 all of which are proven barrel lines. When we located Crimson Jess, we were very pleased to see Easy Jet si100 on his bottom side.  This pedigree has barrels written all over it. There are no weak links.  All are proven racehorses, sires and producers.

Another reason we were drawn to Mr Jess Perry is that these horses are noted for good minds, good looks, good bone and exceptional speed. Crimson Jess’ pedigree is the perfect outcross for the numerous Dash For Cash, Special Effort, and Beduino bloodlines as there are none of these in his pedigree. Since we have been standing sons of Dash For Cash and Special Effort for several years now, not only did we need an outcross for our mares but the general horse population needed one as well.”  To learn more about Crimson Jess, check out the Sandy Ridge website at www.sandyridge.ab.ca

What a wonderful way to start colts!

Seeing is Believing!!
Check out this amazing story!!

Doug and Carol,
We booked a mare to Docs Paradise last year... I thought you might find this short video a bit humorous. "I own a 5 yr old Dudes Genuine San gelding that I purchased about 2 yrs ago. Because of rodeo and work I have not spent a whole bunch of time riding him, but have made a concerted effort to really work him this winter.

Tonight I took him to Team Roping practice for the second or third time. I have tracked maybe 4 steers on him and just generally ridden him around all the commotion. I had just finished riding Blue this evening, So I took off his tack and decided to let him wander around and roll. We were taking off horn wraps and letting the steers out one by one, and Blue walked into the heeling box, turned around, and backed into the corner!!! He was watching the steers in the chute, so I told Leah to pull the gate. Out comes the steer and so does BLUE!!! He ran the steer down the arena to the holding pen, and then into the stripping chute!!

Well, none of us could believe our eyes! So I had Murray walk him into the box again, and I grabbed the video.... (I knew none of my friends would believe me!) And lo and behold, he does it for us again!!! Enjoy the video! I just couldn't believe it!"
Sincerely,
Susie Young

MARES & OWNERS

(Articles here re-printed with the permission of Northern Horse Review)

Question:
I’m standing my stallion at home for his first season,
what do I have to take into consideration when booking outside mares?

That’s a very broad question. There are many issues that should be decided on prior to standing a stallion for his first breeding season. First of all ask yourself “Why do I want to stand my stallion?” Is it for financial gain or ‘a glory trip’? What am I truly hoping to achieve?

Prior to committing to breeding outside mares, we feel that the three most important requirements are a potent stallion, a breeding contract and a qualified veterinarian. We used the word ‘committing’ as standing a stallion is truly commitment. You can’t be here and there and still run the breeding operation successfully. As in our case it has become a ‘lifestyle’. We can’t be at the horse races, horse shows, barrel racings and rodeos as we would like to and still have consistency here at Sandy Ridge.

A potent stallion is an obvious requirement – that’s the easy part. This is a good investment to prevent headaches later next spring. This can be done through the assistance of veterinarians and/or breeding facilities.

The breeding contract is also essential so that the terms of the agreement are recorded prior to breeding. Over the years we have found that the details of even the simplest verbal agreement can be forgotten. A written agreement is the always the best way to avoid hard feelings. Other concerns will be: will I offer a guarantee, if so what kind? What if the stallion dies or there is a change of ownership before my guarantee has expired. How will I handle rebreeds the following year? What if the mare becomes ill or worse yet, dies while in my care?

A qualified veterinarian is an excellent asset. To keep your veterinarian happy he would also appreciate a good set of breeding stocks. These not only take care of him but the mares and foals.

Other issues to consider are:
-Am I knowledgeable enough to handle difficult mares? Some mares can be difficult to handle while others are difficult to conceive. In the latter case, our general rule of thumb is, if the mare goes through two normal breeding cycles with ‘everything in her favor’, meaning she showed heat well, we proved that she actually ovulated and the stallion’s semen was viable then there’s usually something wrong. Its time to investigate by doing an uterine biopsy and culture. These are critical management tools.
-What should the stud fee be?
-Is this going to be financially and psychologically feasible? (Is the pain worth the gain”?)
-How many mares do I suspect my stallion will attract?
-What’s my advertising budget and where should I advertise?
-How will I cover these mares; pasture breeding, hand breeding and/or artificial insemination? -Will I be able to offer shipped semen?
-Where will the mares be boarded and in what manner?
-How will the teasing be done?
-Where will the actual breeding be done?
-Do I have the facilities to manage several mares?
-What will the board rate be?
-Do I have enough feed?
-Do I have enough qualified help?

Liability insurance is a must. As far as liability regarding the mare and foal, the mare owner assumes all risks unless the situation was due to gross negligence on the stallion owner’s part. Life insurance on the mare is the owner’s responsibility. We feel this is an option not a requirement and promise to do the best of our ability the keep the mare and foal safe and healthy. When signing the contract we try to obtain as many contact phone numbers as possible in case of an emergency.

Over the years many of our customers have turned into good friends. No money, and none of our stallions are worth losing a good friendship over. The bottom line is that the mare goes home in foal, in good condition with an affordable bill.
